How to Find a Therapist Who Takes Medicare in Pennsylvania

Most private therapy practices do not take Medicare.

That is the honest starting point.

If you have called around and heard no again and again, it is not you. It is how the system is set up. Many practices never enroll with Medicare. Others stopped taking new Medicare patients years ago.

Several of the clinicians at our Pennsylvania practice accept Medicare. We wrote this guide because families ask us this question every week, and the answers online are mostly written by companies that do not take Medicare at all.

Does Medicare cover therapy?

Yes.

Medicare Part B covers outpatient mental health care. That includes individual therapy and family therapy. It also covers an annual depression screening at no cost.

After you meet your Part B deductible, Medicare pays 80 percent of the approved amount. You pay the remaining 20 percent. Many people have a Medigap or supplement plan that covers some or all of that share.

Which therapists can accept Medicare?

This changed recently, and it matters.

For decades, Medicare only paid psychiatrists, psychologists, and licensed clinical social workers for therapy. Licensed professional counselors could not bill Medicare at all.

That rule changed in January 2024. Licensed professional counselors and licensed marriage and family therapists can now enroll with Medicare and bill for therapy.

This means the pool of available therapists is bigger than it was two years ago. Some articles online have not caught up to this change.

Why do so many practices say no to Medicare?

A few plain reasons.

Medicare pays less than many commercial insurance plans. Enrollment paperwork takes months. Some solo therapists decide it is not worth it.

None of that is your problem to solve. But knowing it explains the string of no answers. It is not about you as a patient.

How do I actually find a therapist who takes Medicare in Pennsylvania?

Four steps that work.

1. Use the official Medicare search tool. The Care Compare tool on Medicare.gov lists enrolled providers by zip code. It is not perfect, but it is the official list.

2. Ask the question in one specific way. Call a practice and ask: are you accepting new Medicare patients right now? Some practices are enrolled but full. The word new matters.

3. Ask about the whole practice, not one therapist. Group practices often have several clinicians who take Medicare. If one is full, another may have openings.

4. Ask about telehealth. Medicare covers online therapy in Pennsylvania. That opens up practices beyond driving distance.

What should I have ready when I call?

Three things.

Your red, white, and blue Medicare card. The name of your supplement or Advantage plan if you have one. A short list of what you want help with, in your own words.

That is enough. The front office handles the rest.

One thing to check on Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage plans are run by private insurance companies. Their therapist networks are different from original Medicare.

If you have an Advantage plan, ask the practice if they take your specific plan. The plan name on your card is what matters, not just the word Medicare.
